Adventure Camping Safari
11 Day / 10 Night

Day 1: Arrival. After long flights and an evening arrival your body needs a comfortable bed and a good night’s sleep. You will be picked up and whisked away to the KIA Lodge, a comfortable lodge in the African bush yet just minutes from the airport.
Overnight: KIA Lodge.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park. Your safari guide will meet you after breakfast to take you to your first destination, Tarangire National Park, a gem of a park often overlooked on the standard tour routes. Here you will see the magnificent baobab tree and can observe the numerous herds of elephant that are resident in the park, as well as impala, gazelle, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, baboon, buffalo, and  lion.  Picnic lunch en route.
Overnight: Jambo/Twiga Camp.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park. After breakfast enjoy a day-long game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, a small and beautiful park famous for its tree-climbing lions and soda lake tinted pink with huge flocks of flamingoes. You will see hippopotamus floating in the lake or grazing at its edge.  In the parks varied environments of groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and grassy flatland you can observe giraffe, buffalo, large troops of baboons, zebra, and monkeys. Manyara is also one of the best parks for bird watching as it boasts a profusion of more than 380 species. Picnic lunch within the park.

Day 4: Lake Eyasi. Drive up the Rift Valley escarpment and southwest to Lake Eyasi, near the home of the Hadzabe Bushmen, the last remaining hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, who welcome a lucky few guests to experience their lifestyle for a day.
Overnight: Lake Eyasi Bush Camp.

Day 5: Lake Eyasi. Spend the day with the Hadzabe learning about their way of life and accompanying them on a hunt for small game.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim and descend nearly 3,000 feet to the crater floor, where the 100 square mile extinct caldera teems with wildlife in such density and abundance that it is almost too hard to believe. Every game animal – both predator and prey –  in East Africa can be found here, with the exception of giraffe and impala. The crater is the best place to spot the rare and elusive black rhino and old bull elephants who come there to “retire” and enjoy the sweet swamp grasses.

Overnight: Gibb’s Farm. On the southern slopes of Ngorongoro Crater sits Gibb’s farm, a working plantation since 1929 and a classic destination for safari adventurers for over 40 years.  The main lodge is set amongst formal English gardens while an organic farm on the grounds supplies most of the fruits and vegetables in the lodge’s delicious home-cooked meals. The farm has a number of activities available to its guests, including a tour of the nearby village, a visit to the local primary school, bird walks, a forest walk to a waterfall, spa treatments, and much more.

Days 7 and 8: Serengeti National Park. After an early breakfast begin the drive west to the Serengeti, Tanzania’s largest national park. The 5,700 square mile park consists of treeless plains, savannah dotted with acacia and granite outcroppings called kopjes, and riverine bush and forest. Across its boundless expanse animals extend as far as the eye can see in a scene that exists nowhere else in the world and one that is quintessentially African. The Serengeti contains a staggering amount of wildlife – about 4 million animals– and is home to a million and a half wildebeest, a quarter million zebra, twice that many gazelle, and tens of thousands of the their predators (lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackals, crocodiles, and others). The Serengeti is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world and the site of one of the most breathtaking events in the natural world: the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest.
Overnights:  Seronera Camp.

Day 9: Karatu. Take a final game drive through the magical Serengeti. On your return you can stop along the way to visit Olduvai Gorge, site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s archeological discoveries of early human ancestors, and enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue on to Karatu, the town at the base of the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy the mild temperatures as you explore this highland town and the nearby coffee farms.
Overnight: Kudu Camp.

Day 10: Arusha Town/Mbahe Farm House. After breakfast you will return toward Arusha, the bustling commercial capitol of northern Tanzania. There will be time for shopping and to tour this colorful town. We arrive by dinnertime at Simon Mtuy’s Mbahe Farm House cottages in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 11: Mbahe Farm House/Departure. You have the day to rest and relax. You can enjoy delicious “homebrew” coffee, grown and roasted on the farm, and meals made with many of the fruits and vegetables from Simon’s organic garden. Activities include light hiking, swimming, visiting with the neighbors, drumming, and tasting homemade banana beer. In the evening you will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport to catch your flight home.

International airfare; optional tipping or gratuities to leaders, guides, crew, or other staff; additional accommodations made necessary by airline schedule changes or other factors; transfers other than to/from airport or Mbahe farm house; pre-trip expenses such as medical immunizations, travel insurance, passports, and visas; airport departure taxes; activities at lodges requiring additional charges and any other expenses of a personal nature such as beverages at the lodges and laundry.
